Collar Touch
Week 4
Introduction and Demo
The Collar Touch exercise helps dogs become comfortable with people reaching for their collar. Many dogs feel uneasy when hands move toward their neck, which can make everyday handling difficult. By pairing gentle collar touches with food rewards, dogs learn that this interaction is safe and positive.
Quick Notes
Here are some important ideas to remember when practicing Collar Touch with your dog.
• Start by reaching under the dog’s chin rather than over their head.
• Many dogs find an overhead reach uncomfortable or intimidating.
• Begin with light, gentle touches before progressing to a firmer collar grab.
• Always mark and reward when the dog accepts the touch calmly.
• Gradually practice touching both sides of the collar.
• Increase the speed and firmness of the reach once the dog becomes comfortable.
• If your dog shows concern, increase the value of the reward.
• This exercise can also be practiced during Settle Box time when the dog is relaxed.
• Practice grabbing the harness as well as the collar if your dog wears one.
Class Experience
Practice at home!
Now it’s your turn to try Collar Touch with your own dog. This exercise is a great way to build comfort with everyday handling while strengthening trust between you and your dog.
As you practice, move slowly and keep the experience positive. Reach gently toward your dog’s collar from the side, mark the moment your dog stays relaxed, and reward generously. Many dogs quickly learn that hands near their collar mean something good is coming.
Take your time with the process and celebrate small successes. With a little repetition and plenty of rewards, most dogs become much more comfortable with collar grabs, making things like attaching a leash or guiding your dog feel smooth and stress-free.
