Boundary – Step 2
Reinforcing Getting On & Staying On

Goal of Step 2

• Build value for being on the boundary

• Reinforce choosing to get on

• Begin encouraging short moments of staying on

What We’re Rewarding Now

• Puppy steps onto the boundary → Mark (“Yes”) and treat on top

• Puppy remains standing on it → Mark and treat on top

• Puppy offers a sit or down → Mark and treat on top

• Any decision to stay on the boundary earns reinforcement

Important Rules

• All treats are delivered on the boundary

• Keep leash loose

• Do not pull or force your puppy onto it

• Allow them to choose to get back on if they step off

Building Duration

• Reward multiple times while they remain on

• You may shift your position slightly to build commitment

• If they step off, calmly wait for them to re-engage

• Keep sessions short and successful

• Calm choices earn rewards

• Practice in short sessions

• Do not lead or lure onto the boundary

• Reward your puppy for choosing it
