Orientation Game

Week 1

Full Class Instructions and Demonstration

Watch the video below to hear Laura introduce the orientation game with the help of class puppy Hoagie!

Quick Notes

The Orientation Game is similar to the Name Attention game, but you do not say the puppy’s name

  1. The goal is to encourage the puppy to turn back and check in with you on their own

  2. This natural look-back is called an “auto check-in”

  3. Auto check-ins help build engagement and connection

  4. Toss a treat a short distance away (not too far at first)

  5. When the puppy grabs the treat and looks back at you, immediately mark with “Yes” or “Good”

  6. Toss another treat in different directions (in front, behind, side)

  7. Continue rewarding every time the puppy snaps their attention back to you

  8. As the puppy improves, you can gradually toss treats farther

  9. Keep the game short, fun, and exciting since puppies are still learning and thinking hard

  10. The focus is on the puppy choosing to engage — not being called

Class Experience

Practice at home!

Now it’s time for you to try with your puppy, and try to do this in a place where the color of the treat doesn’t match the color of the floor!
